7 effect evaporation efficiency at Wissington factory

Challenged with the need to incorporate an additional process steam load within the existing combined heat and power (CHP) plant capacity, an opportunity was developed to utilize seven effect evaporation at British Sugar’s Wissington sugar factory. Installation of additional evaporator area, and associated heat recovery capacity, ensured sufficient flexibility to accommodate the improved evaporator performance within thick juice rds targets. Successful operation during the 2007/08 campaign delivered the required 20% reduction in process steam consumption, but increased reliance on extraction stability was also noted.
