Continuous ion exchange processes

In contrast to many other basic operations in chemical engineering, today ion exchange operations are still carried out predominantly batchwise. Several continuous processes already exist, which to a large extent are also in use on a technical scale. One can distinguish processes with hydraulic and mechanical resin transport. Most of these processes were developed for water purification and/or the hydro- metallurgic industry and can be used only for processing of low viscosity liquids. For the sugar industry, ion exchange processes employing mechanical resin transport are better suited to juices with higher viscosities than hydraulic resin transport processes.
