Sugar manufacturing at Irish Sugar’s Carlow factory – A brief history

The present sugar factory in Carlow started life as a private enterprise and within a few years was taken over by the State. The industry expanded to other parts of the country in line with government industrial expansion policy. It developed machinery production and agricultural services during World War II and further developed these to service the requirements of the native industry initially and afterwards commercially. As a semi-state body government policy has directly influenced decisions but it recently has returned to private ownership along with the companies it spawned.
