Biocides are habitually used in the extraction of sugar beets for sugar production in order to maximize yield. Formaldehyde, quaternary ammonium compounds, dithiocarbamate, hydrogen peroxide, sulphur dioxide, and glutaraldehyde have been studied for this purpose and form the basis for most industry practices throughout the world. In the last fifteen years, Solvay Interox has closely collaborated with a number of sugar companies in the investigation of the potential of a new technology based on peracetic acid. This paper summarizes the results of two extensive factory trials with Raffinerie Tirlemontoise (RT) and tower extraction systems.
