Ammonia stripping

This paper discusses the physical and chemical principles of desorption, in particular the equilibrium between the liquid and gas phases as well as the dissociation equilibrium within the liquid phase. Both the two-substance mixture NH3-H2O and the three-substance mixture NH3-CO2-H20 are looked at. Among the technical principles, the concept of the theoretical separation stage is illustrated by means of the HETP (height equivalent to one theoretical plate) and HTU/NTU (height of one transfer unit/number of transfer units) models, and the intensification ratio and column efficiency are elucidated. Studies were conducted in a pilot plant on the removal of ammonia from technical juices, and the results are described with reference to the theoretical principles.
