The Czech sugar industry in the throes of economic reconstruction

The main features of the evolution of the Czech sugar industry in recent years are described. Stagnation throughout the entire period following World War II as well as other external and domestic factors left the sugar factories in a poor position to cope with the very difficult economic conditions of the initial transition phase. At this point, most companies are still insufficiently capitalized and do not yet generate enough resources on their own to finance the necessary technical and structural transformation of their production capacities. However, even in these extraordinarily difficult circumstances, the Czech sugar industry as a whole has consistently covered the requirements of the domestic market and proven its viability. The signs are that in 1994 the toughest part of the reconstruction process was mastered and the way cleared for future advances.
