Komati – an innovative new sugar mill in South Africa

The new Komati sugar factory has been designed for processing of 5500 t cane per day and a sugar production of 140 000 t per year. Special reference is given to innovative design or choice of equipment of the factory, which is one of the most modern in the world. A special type of sand and rock removal for the cane has been installed. Performance data of the Tongaat-Hulett cane diffuser are given. The juice is concentrated in a four-effect evaporator station with two Kestner evaporators for the first two effects. The sugar is crystallized in three Tongaat-Hulett continuous evaporating crystallizers. An overview of the time and cost to build a mill of this type is given. Also highlighted are the critical areas of concern when managing a fast track project.
