Quantitative ion-chromatographic anion determination for the assessment of the technical value of sugar beet

In the course of this study, an ion-chromatographic method of analysis for the simultaneous quantitative determination of the largest possible range of organic and inorganic anions in sugar beet and their technical products was selected and optimized. This focused on the alkalinity-supplying citrate, oxalate, malate, phosphate, and sulfate anions. High-performance ion exchange chromatography was found to be applicable to the technical products of white sugar manufacture, with satisfactory precision and recognition rates. The results compared well with those of conventional methods. Ion chromatography has the advantage over these methods of simultaneously registering most alkalinity-supplying anions, which permits rapid assessment of sugar beet quality with a view to an alkalinity balance.
