Recent advances in the application of peracetic acid formulations in the European beet sugar industry

The use of Proxitaneâ formulations as a biocide in the sugar industry is described. Previous trials in the United Kingdom and Finland, comparing them against formalin, in both RT drum and tower extraction systems have been successful and have been reported [1]. Further progress has been made since then with reductions in application rates and identification of process improvements. Proxitaneâ has also been successfully compared with systems using glutaraldehyde and dithiocarbamate in a RT5 extraction system in Belgium.
