Performance of the Ukrainian sugar industry in 1995

The average Ukrainian sugar beet harvest has fallen by 12.3mn tonnes (28.2%) in the last five years, compared with 1986-1990. Annual sugar production has shrunk correspondingly from 5mn tonnes to 3.56mn tonnes. In 1995, Ukrainian sugar factories sliced 29mn tonnes of beets and produced 3.49mn tonnes of sugar, 5% more than in 1994. This may be seen as a sign that the production of sugar beets and sugar is becoming stabilized, in the wake of government supports for beet growers and sugar factories last year, designed to boost output. Significantly, the privatization of the sugar industry is continuing. Up to 1 March 1996, 62 sugar factories had been transferred to the private sector, in some cases with participation of foreign capital.
