New equipment, monitoring of mass flows and their application for sugar crystallization

Theme of the European Programme No. ERB EV5V CT 92 0242 were possibilities to save energy in beet sugar factories. It concerns a method to produce very high quality sugar from a very high DS content feed syrup and thereby reducing the consumption of heat energy for crystallization. A dissolving tank and a new batch evaporating crystallizer as well as new software programmes are described. Tests were effected under the industrial scale-conditions in Italian, Spanish, and French beet sugar factories and the efficiency proven. The important decrease of consumption of thermal energy of crystallization makes modifications necessary in some other parts of the factory and the results of calculations new energetical equillibria of the factories are given. The new process will be profitable in a new sugar factory and is difficult to justify as a modification in an existing one.
