From sugar to sweetener market

Not only world sugar production, but also the sweetener market has developed dramatically in the last 50 years. New sweeteners constantly invaded the market. Sugar faces serious competition from nutritive glucose syrups, fructose syrups and isoglucose, dietetically low-calorie fructose, polyfructosans and polyols, and the well-known artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame, and acesulfame-K. Blends of various components make it possible to manufacture foods and beverages, the sweetness and taste profiles of which are similar, and in some cases even superior, to those sweetened with sugar. The sugar industry must strive to maintain its present market position and to recover lost market shares.
