The Sugar Research Institute – Australia

The history and present state of Sugar Research Institute (SRI), which was founded in 1949, is described. The SRI is the major research and development provider to the Australian sugar industry. The activities of the SRI include all activities in sugar manufacturing from cane harvesting to sugar refining. SRI manufactures, either in-house or under contract, a range of process control instrumentation. SRI’s Analytical Services Unit undertakes analyses and quality control work for clients both within and from outside the Australian sugar industry. Collaboration with outside researchers, especially from universities, has produced many results. Recent developments in cane separation, boiler and combustion technology, clarification, continuous evaporating crystallization and renewalbe energy application are described.
